According to /film (http://www.slashfilm.com):
Shrek 4 and Shrek 5 Announced
Dreamworks co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg has announced that there will be a Shrek 4 (2010) and Shrek 5, but THAT IS IT!"
“It’s a finite story, has been from the beginning and I think that’s part of its integrity, part of its strength, that we’re not thinking this up as we go,” he told The Age. “Ultimately we will come back to understand how Shrek arrived in that swamp. We will reveal his story.”
So there you have it. We have a prequel story to look forward to, and who knows what else. Oh yeah, and there is that Christmas special, and the theme park ride and… okay, realistically, the Shrek franchise will never truly end - will it?
Oh the pain!

Oh, I agree. If you are going to make sequels, be sure that was planned in the writing (either a long story (harry Potter) to tell or unrelated stories (James Bond or get out of the pool!)

I'm definatly with you on that. The subject have been abit on discussion on this thread aswell: http://www.animwatch.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1084
about something that seemingly seems to be a promo video for the future film(s).

If you are to be a producer, you need to be thinking about MONEY...
Oh, if we make lots of movies based on this one movie people liked, we'll make lots of MONEY...
It's like Arnold says "Sequels do really well in the box office..."

I think it basically comes down to that its easier/cheaper to cash in on a sequel of a sucessefull movie than to develop a compleatly new concept that are uncertain about how well it would resonance to the audiences. So money is probadly the key issue on more than one level.

I heard from a friend that he heard that Dreamworks HAS to make more Shreks because it's the only thing that makes it possible for them to make other CG movies (because of all the monies).
Judging from the other movies, I wouldn't doubt it, but I can't back any of it up.

I'd buy that statement aswell even if there is no truth in it.

nah, i don't buy that. Shark Tale, Over the Hedge, and Madagascar all did very well. The Shreks just make money and they're milkin' that dead horse till it's bones are sparkling white.

Hmm. I don't think Shark Tale did well enough to justify a sequel. (THE NUMBERS (http://www.the-numbers.com/movies/2004/SHRKS.php).) It only made a profit of a couple hundred million dollars, as opposed to the KILLING studios are really after. SHREK 1 (http://www.the-numbers.com/movies/2001/SHREK.php) profited up around $400 million, SHREK 2 (http://www.the-numbers.com/movies/2004/SHRK2.php) profited up around $800 million. That's profit, folks, not gross. If you had a property that could profit you in the billions, I bet you'd milk that dead horse, too. Hell, I would. And as Scott Adams said, you can't get to Sold Out without passing through Filthy Rich.
Meanwhile, this just in:
Madagascar 2 (http://www.boxofficeprophets.com/tickermaster/movienews.cfm?tmID=3010)
Over the Hedge 2 (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=15173)
To Suits, sequels are as addicting as crack. They're pretty safe, and God bless the moviegoing public, are pretty proven. Look, folks - DW may be milking Shrek to death, but SOMEONE IS BUYING the TICKETS and DVDs!

Very true. They do it for the business, not for the integrity of the art. Such a strange industry, you'd figure the two would have a bit of a correlation.
In any case, there's no sense in being up in arms about it. They just want to make money, and seems like this franchise is doing a spectacular job for them.
No one can blame studios for doing it. It just makes perfect fiscal sense.

Yeah, no doubt money is a factor... I don't mind sequels so long as it has a good story and has heart... like Shrek one. On the other hand I do think sequels are being overdone now... my 2 cents.

Wait a minute... there's supposed to be integrity in film art? Why didn't I get that memo??!!
