Pretty sparce list considering everything animated that came out (not that i think there were any that SHOULD have been nominated, at least, none come to mind).
I dunno know about you but it's pretty clear to me that Howl's Moving Castle will win because the Academy loves Miyazaki, and One Man Band will win because the Academy loves Pixar (except that one time they decided to award the oscar to shrek over Monster's Inc....)
Of course, the only thing on that list i've seen is Corpse Bride.

Here's more about the nominated shorts from Cartoon Brew (http://www.cartoonbrew.com/):
BADGERED is the "laugh" film. The quickest way to an Oscar nomination (and sometimes a win) is to produce a film that has some big laughs. BADGERED is about a sleepy badger who lives in a mountain that becomes a nuclear missile silo. It's no more original than an old Barney Bear cartoon, but it's nicely drawn and very very funny.
THE MOON AND THE SON is Canemakers powerful autobiographical account of his relationship with his father. Strong, absorbing, skillful - and clearly hard for the Academy to ignore.
JASPER MORELLO is an amazing half-hour fantasy "mini-feature" done with some combination of silhouette cut-outs and CG (or for all I know, it's entirely CG). Beautifully art directed, great Jules Verne-esque story, and produced at very high level of craft.
"9" is supposedly a student film produced at UCLA—but it's an extremely well made, slick, professional piece of science fiction filmmaking. Excellent CG art direction and animation.
ONE MAN BAND is another great Pixar short—as lavish and handsome as any of their feature films, and just as clever. Produced in widescreen CinemaScope, BAND once again shows the range of subject matter and the strong character animation talent the studio is known for.
The website for JASPER MORELLO looks pretty cool:

I forgot that the Academy loves Wallace and Gromit. Maybe that one is more of a toss up.

I don't remember where I saw it, but I saw Badgered a long time ago - it had been on the web. It was very nicely done, with some very simple but nice 2D animation. Oscar? I don't think so. I don't know how the academy picks their movies, but personally, I don't consider oscars to be prestigious, simply because it's obvious when their choices are based on nepetism. I don't think their oscar picks are anywhere near close to popular opinion. It's just some stuffy old artsy farts.

I was surprised to find out from someone who claims to know, that the Academy is only comprised of people who have been nominated before.
Not press. Not just actors, directors, and other industry people. Just those who has been nominated before.
This means that if you have a big studio that's been nominated before, you can really have an effective Get Out the Vote campaign with your employees, because everyone who worked on the film and was therefore nominated, gets to vote. This can be good for business.
I don't know if this is true, but it would really explain why some of the larger studios have gotten nominated for films that I don't think really stood up to smaller productions in the past.
I'm glad to see this year there aren't a whole slew of major studios battling it out in the short animation category. It's possible my friend is under the wrong impression, or I got it wrong in my head.
If anyone has good, solid evidence one way or the other on this, I'd love to hear it.

Found some resources to backup what i recall an old acquaintance in the academy told me some time ago. However, they say nothing beyond that the members are "invited" into the academy. Not indicating that nomination is a prerequisite. I'd say it was at least safe to assume that just because you were nominated doesn't AUTOMATICALLY make you a member of the academy, as the academy would most likely balloon in size. But i'm sure it helps.

Maybe next year I'll hold a Non-Oscars. The AnimWatch Awards for the best animation in a given year. Only AnimWatch Forum members can vote. You like?
I don't know about the little gold statues, though... maybe I can get some of those little Rustboy toys and spray paint 'em gold?

Ooooh, I like the idea of the Animwatch Non-Oscars! Sounds like fun.
Maybe you could just make a picture of a little gold statuette, like a blog button, and winners could put them on their websites.
But most important: Will there be a party!? And who will bring the beer?

The Oscars are an opulent event with a red carpet, lots of glitzy celebrities, corporate sponsored giveaway goody-bags, champagne and a red carpet, lots of press, TV cameras...
The AnimWatch awards would be held in some dodgy warehouse with beer. In cans. National Bohemian or something. (Ach! Put it back in the horse!)
Hmm. The Gold Animation Bug sounds like a winning idea, Tevi...

This AnimWatch award seems like such a good idea that I've opened up a discussion on it HERE (http://www.animwatch.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=13). Please come over and give us your thoughts.
