This is incredible news. I haven't seen a short film I liked better than '9'. And to get mixed up with Tim Burton... holy mackerel.
Well done, Shane!

hi,
yep, that sure are great news for shane acker.
when something like this happens, i always wonder: what is it that makes a project like this so appealing and interesting for a major studio? furthermore, how do they know that this guy is capable of directing a million dollar feature film project? also, why does something like that not happen more often? is it that other projects are not as appealing for LARGE audiences (money, money, money)?
anyways, congratulations to mr.acker, this is like a dream come true for any apsiring filmmaker. i mean, TIM BURTON! what the ****?

ps: to og and anybody who has seen the short already: what is it that makes this film so unique? the environments? the animation, the plot, the atmosphere? the overall feeling?

Yes.
Basically, it is all of those things. It is a little 10 minute film that makes a complete statement visually as well as cerebrally. It sets up a unique situation - you don't even understand where it's going at first - and then pays it off in the end. It's very cool, beautiful to look at, and has a nice bit of action as well.
My only concern as it slides into Feature World is how it could be expanded on. Obviously lots and lots of material would have to be created, but there is certainly a suggestion of a past, and maybe a future, in the film, so perhaps it is not so outlandish after all to see it stretched into a feature. If they stuck to the source material, it would be very interesting to see more of that world.
However, one of my favorite things about the film is that there is no dialog. I would LOVE to see it done without dialog, like Triplets of Belleville, but then I am sure they will want to get some stars attached to the film for that Celebrity Factor major films seem to need to have. Still, a guy can hope...

Can't wait!
I was reading an interview with Shane Acker by Sam Chen (of "Eternal Gaze" fame [also profiled here on AnimWatch]) and SA had a great quote:
At the same time I’d say that animation is sort of like a crazy, insanely meticulous, anal-retentive, all-consuming thing
Heheh... You can catch the whole interview here: http://www.animationtrip.com/item.php?id=742
